Class Details - Between Matte and Gloss: Urban Stillness

Contrasts or interplay? Both! Working with contrasting materials opens up extraordinary possibilities: you create a new form of depth, light, and visual tension on the surface of the artwork.

The main materials responsible in this dynamic? Matte textures through wax and high-gloss surfaces through resin. So a dialogue between encaustic and resin art.

From Dialogue to Polylogue: with Pigment Layers, Pours, Stencils

The image base for the creative synthesis is built step by step – using spray, shellac ink, pigments, and collage elements. The focus here is on pigments. It’s also about the effects you can create with the same pigments in different materials – for example in wax, resin, or liquid paints. Additionally, you will mix your own colors using pigment drops. Wax plays a key role in the base: clear, tinted, applied in flat layers, and through stencils.

The stencil continues this leading role. You use it both for working with wax and for creating with spray. This produces optical and tactile overlays, resulting in fascinating graphic structures and visual rhythms. Resin also acts as an enhancer for this character.

With layers of matte encaustic wax and high-gloss resin, you create a vibrant surface – and a special spatial depth. As a deliberate break from the typical use, I will also show you how to matte resin: adding yet another exciting contrast to the surface of your Urban Stillness.
